Ever get tired of watching late-night infomercials and seeing those cheesy guys with bad haircuts hocking pills that make big promises that you KNOW won't deliver? What about the hunks of steel in the muscle mags that say they got that way from Pill X - but you'd bet your first born they did more than use Pill X to look like that!

Then there's the anticipation of taking the leap and buying a new supplement, tearing open the bottle and taking it for a few days, only to find out it's a glorified caffeine pill that does nothing more than make you feel like you're gonna shake yourself unconscious in the gym.

The fact of the matter is: No supplement fits into a one-size-fits-all category. There's no such thing as a magic pill to lose weight or gain muscle.

However, there are supplements out there that actually DO assist you towards getting that lean, firm body, those rippling muscles, and the turning-of-heads by the opposite sex you're looking for (and that goes for both men AND ladies!)

Keep in mind: The key to remember about ANY supplement is timing! Just like you wouldn't eat a large meal 15 minutes before bedtime, you gotta know when to feed your body the right supplement to get closer to your body goals!

Key Supp #1: Whey Protein Isolate

This amino acid is highly prized by most in the strength training community for its bio availability (aka how much of it is actually absorbed by the body) and that its more easily processed by the body (read: less tummy aches).

However, you gotta keep in mind that whey protein causes an insulin spike, therefore raising your blood sugar level, so you want to confine your intake of this one to strictly after you've worked out, and not at night. In about an hour, you'll have burned through the protein and find yourself hungry again. And at 2am, the last thing you wanna think about is what's in the fridge ('cause you'll prol'ly go for something of the junk food variety!)

Key Supp #2: Casein

So if you can't drink a whey protein shake before bed, how do you keep that full feeling throughout the night?The answer is still protein, just a different kind.

While whey protein is a byproduct of milk, it only makes up about 20% of the protein in milk. The other 80% is casein! This stuff can take as long as 7 hours to fully release all the amino acids into your blood stream, making it perfect to nosh on before bed. The result? Casein protein keeps you full overnight! Just don't take right after your workout. It sits in your stomach like a lead weight. Casein protein turns to glue in your gut (literally). Down your casein shake about an hour or so before bed for best results.

This author prefers a chocolate flavored casein shake mixed with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Can you say Reese's Cup? Yum!

Key Supp #3: Creatine

Prol'ly the most widely researched and scientifically sound supplement on the market today! Women fear it'll turn them into the Incredible Hulk. Men believe it'll turn them into the Incredible Hulk.

But they're both wrong.

When properly consumed, your body converts creatine into phosphocreatine which stores energy for use by the muscles (along with water, but more on that in a sec). Studies indicate it may also help maintain muscle mass and prevent wasting of muscle strength while recovering from muscle injury!

Creatine is not for cyclists, runners, or 'pure cardio' fans - you know, lower intensity, repetitive endurance activities. Use it more for short bursts of energy like those needed during weight lifting or playing a sport like basketball.

But you're in no danger (whether you see it as a good or bad thing) of turning into the Incredible Hulk. Creatine merely gives your muscles energy to perform when you need them to.

Take 15-30 grams daily for 3-4 days followed by a maintenance dose of 2-5 grams daily. (Don't wanna take it in pill form? You can always just eat more wild game, lean red meat, and fish (including salmon and tuna).) Source: Solve It with Supplements by Robert A. Schulman, MD.

Note: Due to its water-retaining properties, creatine isn't necessarily for someone trying to lose weight (you'll gain a pound or two while taking it, but the water weight goes away if you stop taking creatine). Also, caffeine may inhibit the effects of creatine. Finally, (as if you needed to be reminded) drink lots of water to make up for that being used by creatine in the muscles.

Key Supp #4: Glutamine

Our next supp is produced in small amounts when you eat and helps with recovery after a workout. Due to its muscle sparing effects, glutamine stimulates biocarbonate production which neutralizes acid production in your muscles (put simply, less soreness after you've hit the gym!) Your body manufactures glutamine from the glutamic acid in the liver, which is why liver-related diseases can often result in a glutamine deficiency (think liver cirrhosis or cancer).

It's even been suggested by scientists that glutamine may prevent some athletes from getting sick or infections after 'periods of major athletic exertion' (think contest or competition). Glutamine is stored in the muscle tissues to be converted to glucose and used for energy as your body needs it.

Glutamine is available in powder form and can be mixed with most fluids (except hot water or high-acid juices like orange as it changes its chemical composition). Glutamine pills are also quite common. Dosage ranges from 1-10 grams daily.

Note: Occasional constipation may occur. Drink 10 glasses of water and keep an eye on your soluble fiber intake while taking glutamine.

Key Supp #5: L-Arginine

Wouldn't it be great to have a supplement that took care of sexual dysfunction, aided in thehealing of wounds, removal of ammonia from body, secretion of important hormones, functioning of immune system? Arginine's your supp on this one!

Its main role is to help body produce nitric oxide, a substance that dilates blood vessels and relaxes them to allow blood to flow more freely throughout the body.

In plain English - think of your blood vessels as pipes. The bigger the pipe, the more that'll flow through it. Ah, 5 - hydroxytryptophan. There's a word you don't use every day! Better known as 5-HTP, your body uses it to turn it into serotonin (which also works to combat insomnia, depression, headaches, and chronic pain).

Serotonin acts as a gossip line (neurotransmitter) that carries messages between nerve cells. This author I uses it because, with all the energy from a good workout, blood flowing freely and quickly, it can be hard to relax at night (and your muscles can't recuperate without 8 hours of rest!) You'll sleep like a baby when you take 5-HTP on an empty stomach before bedtime (give it about 30 minutes, max).

Bonus Supp #2: L-Carnitine

We're putting out another call to your liver for the production of another muscle assistant! This time, it's for L-Carnitine. This little gem is produced from the amino acids lysine and methionine and most healthy people produce enough on their own. However, those looking to change the shape of their body (whether bigger or smaller) would want to take an L-Carnitine supplement for more of a good thing!

How Much Protein Do You Need to Build Muscle?

How much protein do you need to build muscle? There has been disagreement about this for the past 100 years I think. In fact, since man (or woman) first picked up a boulder, bench pressed it, and did a monster size, most muscular pose; there has been a clash between the "eat till the protein comes out of your ear" group and the "you don't need no blanking protein to build muscle; look at a rhino" camp.

When I first started pumping iron, the two camps seemed best represented by Bill Pearl with the "you do not need a lot of protein," and Vince Gironda who advocated some serious protein usage. Following some of what Vince suggested; I would eat nothing but steak and eggs for breakfast during football season and carbo up with a ton of spaghetti on game day. It seems crazy now.

I guess I have followed the high protein thought pretty much my whole life. When I worked out heavily, I would average a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. I would eat about 180 to 220 grams of protein a day. Those periods when I did not work out quite as much, I still consumed about a 100 grams a day. Did it work for me? Was high protein what help me put on close to 210lbs of decent muscle back a few years ago (or eight)? Maybe or maybe not; I could not definitely say because I had no benchmark to go by.

So, how much protein is enough protein? That question seems a lot like another question which asks, "How long should a man's leg be?" An answer could be, "as long as it takes to reach the ground." You need as much protein as it takes to build muscle, for you.

The Mayo clinic recommends that protein intake be about 10% to 35% of a 2,000 calorie diet. That amount translates to a whopping range of 50 to 175 grams of protein. That is huge range and not much help. Even among the experts, there is some question marks, or at least that is how I interpret being given such a wide range.

And no wonder, after all; you cannot understate the importance of protein to everyday living, let along muscle building. Protein is essential to human life. Your skin, bones, muscles and organ tissue all contain protein. Protein is found in your blood, hormones and enzymes, too.

You need protein. The question is again, how much do you need? Your body takes the ingested protein and breaks it down into its amino acid components for use. The body cannot store unused protein. Any unneeded amino acids are stripped of its nitrogen and stored as fat (or used as energy). The nitrogen elements are processed as waste by your kidney and liver. Not being an expert or a guru here, you may want to verify all this, but I think I am in the ballpark.

So, if you only need 100 grams but eat 180 grams, guess what, the balance of the 80 grams is either fat around the gut or pooped out. Either way, the excess causes undue stress on the body. Protein is not a good source of energy, unless you are a big cat roaming the plains of the Serengeti. Hence, there is no incentive to eat more protein than you need. Quite the contrary, you punish your body by consuming more than you need.

But understand this, after all the thousands and thousands of years, there is still no scientific basis for thinking that high protein consumption is better for building muscle. There is no scientific rationale for thinking that you need a gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight. There are none that I know of.

None other than what appears to be commonsense. If by all agreement, your average bear needs 45 to 70 grams of protein (woman and man, respectively); then would it not stand to reason that your muscle building grizzly bear would need a lot more? The red flag, though, is that a lot of supplement companies out there use this sort of reasoning to push a lot of expensive protein powders.

As for what I suggest, well, this is what I do. Being nearly 49, I just do not have the energy, or the desire to be a gym rat again. But that does not mean I am not interested in working out or being healthy. To the contrary, with two little girls, I have tremendous incentive to live a long life; long enough to see my little girls eventually have their own little girls.

I eat a balance diet with lots of veggies and fruit. And I drink about 10 to 15 cups of water a day. As a true meat eater, I probably get my daily 75 grams easy. But because I do work out about 45 minutes every other day fairly hard, I now drink about two tall glasses of milk daily. And I probably consume about 12 eggs a week, or so. All that probably bumps my protein intake up to about an average of 110 grams a day which I think works for me.

But it is all an inexact science. How do I know it works for me? Well, less than that; I get hungry and cranky. Vince Gironda used to say that protein keeps the hunger pains away and gives you the full feeling. I will buy that. I do know that if I drink any less water, I feel parched. Any less protein and I feel cranky. Is that really a true rationale for eating my 100 to 110 grams of protein, no, but it is my way of listening to my body.

And that is ultimately the key here, I think. You need to listen to your body. Your body will tell you if you are not consuming enough complex carbohydrates. Your body will tell you if you are eating too much protein (the increasing girth will be sign).

If nothing else, start with your baseline protein need of 75 grams and add 50%; then assess how you respond. How are your workouts? What are your energy levels like and how fast are you recovering? Based on those observations, either cut back or add a little more. I have talked about the 3 circles and how you should move those around; well, same thing here.

Lastly, I no longer recommend buying tons of protein powder. Instead I think you would do just as well to drink more milk (or soy) and have a few more eggs a day. These are quality sources of protein and pennies on the dollar compared to the protein powder on the market today. A quart of milk and 3 eggs will add about 56 great grams of protein to your diet. Do you need more?

Also, if you eat three balanced meals a day with about a quarter pound of meat as a part of that meal; you will probably consume about 28 to 30 grams at that seating. That gives you anywhere from 80 to 90 grams a day. Now add in the extra milk and eggs; that will put you in the 150 gram range. And guess what, you did not have to buy a super premium nitrogen enhanced, whey concentrate, and super-duper hi-test protein powder.

Five Fast and Easy High Protein Snacks

If you are serious about losing weight or building lean muscle mass, you probably already go out of your way to eat protein rich foods. Amongst strength athletes, the general rule of thumb is to ingest 1.0 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Personally, I prefer to use whey and casein protein shakes as the source for most of my daily protein. For me, it's easy to drink a couple of 16 ounce protein shakes during the day. But what about the rest of the day? This list of five fast and easy protein snacks will help you achieve your protein intake goals.

5 Lb Whey Protein

1. Cottage Cheese - This ubiquitous denizen of the dairy case is rich in protein. With just an eight ounce serving of low fat cottage cheese, you can get approximately 28 grams of slow digesting protein. This slow release protein can also help minimize hunger until it's time for your next snack or meal. Cottage cheese can be eaten plain or, for some variety, add raw fruit or vegetables to the mix.

2. Jerky - Depending on the type of meat that the jerky is made of, you can expect to get eight to ten grams of protein per ounce. Jerky is a great snack when you are on the go, since it requires no preparation and does not have to be refrigerated. One drawback for jerky is the potential for high sodium content.

3. Tuna - Advances in packaging have made it possible to get tuna in easy to open packs or pull top cans. No longer do you have to have a can opener available to eat this quick and protein dense snack. Every ounce of tuna is roughly 90% protein. If protein is too dry for you, experiment with mixing it with mustard, low-fat mayo, or pickles. It can be mixed with some leafy greens for a quick salad.

4. Deli Sliced Turkey - Sliced turkey is readily available from most markets. It's a tasty and protein rich meat with nearly a 90% protein composition. While turkey is naturally low carb and protein rich, be aware that processed turkey sometimes has been infused with carb loaded flavoring. Be sure to check the nutritional facts on the packaging in order to ensure that you are able to get cuts that are as low in carbs as possible.

5. Heart Healthy Nuts - Walnuts, pistachios and almonds are great choices for both their protein content and their heart healthy fats (Remember that our bodies need good fats!) For variety, consider getting mixes of these types of nuts. Nuts are higher in calories than the other four snacks on our list, so please take that into consideration if you are strictly working on losing weight instead of building muscle mass.

Hopefully, this list of five easy high protein snacks will help you to reach your fitness goals. There are many more protein rich snacks available. Be sure to read the nutritional facts labels and do your research. I've found that creating a varied, yet healthy, diet plan has enabled me to resist dietary temptations on my journey to eating healthy and clean.

Can Excessive Protein Have Negative Effects On Your Health?

In bodybuilding circles, the debate over just how much protein athletes need each day has raged since people first picked up weights. We know protein is essential for building new muscle, and that there is an absolute baseline for athletes. Most people put it at .75 to 1.0 grams per pound of bodyweight. That would mean a 200 pound person would need 150 to 200 grams of protein per day.

Most strength coaches, bodybuilders, and personal trainers would vehemently dispute this number. Most competitive bodybuilders (high intermediate to advanced) consume at least 1.5 to 2.0 grams of protein daily per pound of bodyweight. This would put the daily requirement for a 200 pound bodybuilder at 300 to 400 grams per day. This is the most common number for strength athletes.

5 Lb Whey Protein

It should be noted that these numbers are based upon the general consensus of the weight training community. There is no scientific conclusion on this matter. It is known that a point, perhaps 3 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, the body begins to feel harm from the excess protein. If you possess a genetic predisposition to kidney disease, the additional workload can and likely will accelerate the illness. If you are a healthy adult, the excess protein shouldn't be a problem.

As with all things in life, moderation is the key. Two grams of protein per bodyweight is a good, safe guide for bodybuilding. One gram per pound is likely not enough, and three grams per pound can put you at risk. The 200 pound athlete should consume 300 to 400 grams of protein daily. The goal of bodybuilding is to improve quality of life, and 2.0 grams of protein will certainly do that. However, since the long term implications of 3.0 grams or more per pound of bodyweight are not yet known, it's often better to play it safe and follow the traditional numbers which have been shown to be safe.
